Our Therapy-First Approach

While medications can reduce symptoms, anxiety often has deeper drivers.

Our therapy model focuses on identifying:

  • Adversity or unresolved stressors

  • Trauma history

  • Family system dynamics

  • Cognitive distortions

  • Avoidance patterns

We use structured modalities such as:

  • EMDR

  • CBT

  • DBT

  • Family Systems Therapy

  • Psychodynamic therapy

The goal is not just temporary symptom relief, but durable emotional regulation and resilience.

Dr. Watson’s work in trauma-informed care, including themes explored in Conquering PTSD, informs our structured approach to anxiety treatment.

Trauma and Anxiety

Anxiety frequently has roots in unresolved trauma or chronic adversity.

When indicated, we use trauma-informed treatment approaches to address:

  • Hypervigilance

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Avoidance behaviors

  • Chronic stress activation

Addressing trauma often reduces anxiety at its source rather than only suppressing symptoms.

Medication Options for Anxiety

When appropriate, medication may be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Options may include:

  • SSRIs

  • SNRIs

  • Buspirone

  • Propranolol

  • Hydroxyzine

  • and more

Propranolol may be used for performance anxiety, public speaking, or situational panic symptoms when appropriate.

We prescribe benzodiazepines conservatively and only when clinically appropriate.

Medication decisions are individualized and integrated with therapy whenever possible.

Advanced Options for Severe or Persistent Anxiety

For individuals whose anxiety has not adequately responded to therapy and medication, additional treatment strategies may be considered.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Ketamine Assisted Therapy may be offered in certain cases as an off-label intervention when clinically appropriate. Off-label treatment requires informed consent and is typically private pay.

A comprehensive evaluation is required to determine suitability.

For anxiety co-occurring with persistent depression, see our Treatment-Resistant Depression page.
