What Is Treatment-Resistant Depression?

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) refers to depressive symptoms that do not adequately improve after appropriate therapy and medication trials.

While some definitions require failure of multiple medications, we believe patients should not have to endure prolonged suffering before accessing advanced care.

If depression has not meaningfully improved after a structured trial of therapy or medication, further evaluation is appropriate.

Why Earlier Escalation Matters

Waiting for multiple medication failures can prolong suffering and functional impairment.

When clinically appropriate, earlier consideration of advanced treatments may reduce long-term burden and improve outcomes.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Treatment-Resistant Depression

  • Persistent depressive symptoms despite treatment

  • Partial improvement followed by relapse

  • Intolerable medication side effects

  • Chronic low mood lasting years (Persistent Depressive Disorder)

  • Functional impairment despite ongoing care

No. While some insurance plans require multiple failed trials, we evaluate patients individually. If prior treatment has not produced meaningful improvement, advanced options may be considered.
